Recent technological advances like social media, apps, and the Internet in general do more positive things for us than negative things. They make the daily hustle and struggle easier, more convenient, and straight-up better in more ways than I can quantify.

One thing technology makes more difficult, however, is breaking up.

It has made it difficult to expel people completely from your life.

You may be thinking you don’t want to remove your ex from your life. If you are, you probably haven’t recently gone through a crippling break-up and the recovery process that follows. It can be extremely therapeutic to get an ex-lover completely off your radar for a while you let you body and soul heal.

Here are a few apps and websites that will help you with that.

KillSwitch: For a cent less than a buck, you can download this app that will delete anything on your Facebook that you’ve tagged your ex in. Combine this with an unfriending and maybe even a block, and you should have your bases covered, far as Facebook is concerned. This is beneficial because it eliminates the temptation to scour your timeline in an effort to recall better days when you had a better half.

Eternal Sunshine: Named after the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, wherein people are able to erase a jilted lover from their memory forever, this extension completely removes your ex-lover from your Facebook universe. However, it does not unfriend your ex. This is pretty great because you can avoid the strange and awkward conversation that can come with an unfriending. (I’ve written about this and talked about it on HuffPost Live. I know all about depressing post-relationship problems.)

Never Liked It Anyway: This website is where the materials from relationships go to die. When you go through a break-up, you’ll probably be left with some unwelcome relics your ex gave you, or that remind you of her, and you will want to rid yourself of these things. Instead of throwing them away, log on there and sell them. You can also purchase things other broken-hearted people have put on there. It’s like a flea market for the forever alone.

Ex Lover Blocker: This app lets your friends know when you try to call your ex, so that they can then get a hold of you and tell you to get a goddamn hold of yourself. And it publicly calls you out on Facebook when you try to call the ex. Believe me: public shaming is very effective.

DrunkDial: When is it most difficult to let an ex go? When you’re severely intoxicated, of course. This app makes you pass a sobriety test before it allows you to call your ex-girlfriend—a move you’ll surely live to regret. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with text messaging. So watch out for the part of the night where you’re tempted to express yourself via emoji.

EraseUrX: If you can’t trust yourself to not get drunk and hit up the ex, download this app. It will erase their number from your phone, and it also incorporates some pageantry. The app helps you create an email, an eff-you photo from your phone’s camera, or even a voice message giving you the last word that is sent to your ex before their number is ejected from your phone. Just make sure that if they respond to your message that you delete the message—otherwise their number will be there on your phone.

Block Your Ex: This browser plug-in works on as many as five exes, in case you’re having a really, really bad couple of years on the relationship front. You provide their name and URLs for their social media sites or blogs, and the plug-in makes sure those sites and her name will not come across your browser unless you really want them to.
