(HealthDay News) — Untouched canned or frozen fruit and vegetables may be just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts. But added ingredients may make them less healthy.

To get the most nutritious produce possible, the American Heart Association advises:

  • Always read package labels. Choose options with the lowest amounts of added salt and sugar.
  • Look for produce that is packed in its own juices or water.
  • Avoid produce packed in syrup or a heavy sauce.
  • Before using canned produce, drain and rinse well in a colander.
